The Fire Island

A custom-designed gas fireplace conceived as a central furniture piece—one that defines space, creates connection, and becomes a natural focal point for gathering and conversation.

The Fire Island was designed specifically for this home as a multifunctional architectural element rather than a conventional fireplace.
Beyond its role in heating a large two-story house, the fireplace was conceived as a central piece of furniture—acting as a semi-open divider between the living room and dining area while inviting interaction and shared presence.

Positioned at the heart of the main living space, the fireplace creates a sense of balance and orientation, allowing visual continuity between areas while subtly defining each zone.
Above it, a lowered ceiling integrates the chimney and conceals a single air-conditioning unit that efficiently serves both spaces during the summer months, reinforcing a clean and cohesive design language.

The result is a custom-made element that combines function, spatial definition, and atmosphere—designed as an integral part of the home’s architecture and daily life.

Functional Sculpture

Positioned at the center of the public space, the fireplace sits between the dining area and the living room. This placement allows it to efficiently heat both zones while acting as a semi-open divider—defining each area within a continuous open-plan layout.

A Dual Material Expression

The materials selected for the fireplace body create a dialogue between modernist glass and plaster on one hand, and split wood and rustic brick on the other. Together, they form a balanced composition that bridges contemporary clarity with warmth and texture.

Customized Design Development

Multiple versions of the fireplace were developed, each exploring different balances between classic, rural elements and contemporary modernist forms. Ultimately, the very first design proved to be the most accurate—where the dialogue between materials and shapes best aligned with the space and the atmosphere the homeowners sought to create.

Safety and Precision

As part of the planning process, the project was developed in collaboration with a professional fireplace consultant, ensuring full compliance with the strictest safety standards. The design was translated into detailed 2D and 3D drawings, allowing the concept to be accurately adapted and executed by the contractors.

A Multifunctional Outcome
At the end of the process, the clients received an innovative, one-of-a-kind element that serves multiple purposes: heating the home, subtly dividing and defining the open space, and functioning as a sculptural focal point that invites conversation and gathering among family and friends.
